This is what I keep saying

As the market grows, it provides room for more "winners":

Nintendo has updated their net profit figures. ‘Net income was about 82 billion yen ($760 million) for the year ended March 31, compared with 33.2 billion yen’ last year. Their original forcast [sic] for this year was 70 billion yen, so it looks like they did even better than they were expecting.

When people ask me how much longer Nintendo will be able to compete, I am stumped. No one asks how much longer RC Cola will be around, or Burger King. Isn't there room for 3 consoles? And if not, lets get rid of that crappy Sony console, The only thing that anyone seems to like about it is the controllers, and they have stolen technology in them...

I think it's the constant anti-business propaganda theme of the small guys getting run out of town, and the big players getting bigger and consolidating more and more.

However, with consoles, it's a bit trickier, because you need people to make games for them. When I decided between X-box, PS2 and Nintendo, I almost made the decision based on where I could get GTA III:San Andreas vs. Halo 2 vs. Metroid.

The thing is, though, as long as Nintendo keeps making Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc., I think they're guaranteed enough of an audience to support their business.

And, FWIW, I like Checkers/Rally's the most, when I eat that filth. And they're not even close to 3rd place.

So which did you buy?

X-box, remember?

I ended up going to Gamespot's "reviews" section and comparing on the basis of which had the most games with a very high rating recently, and which of those games seemed the most appealing to me personally.

Many of the Nintendo ones (e.g. Paper Mario) aren't my bag. And with PS2 vs. X-Box, it basically came down to wanting to beat my coworkers at Halo 2.

But if there was a video game rental place walking distance to my apt., I might very well have gotten a GameCube (there's a lot of overlap between PS2 and X-box titles, it seems).

Duh, now I remember.

I'm still not feeling the XBox though.

And there is much that I disagree with in that Gamespot list.

Of course I am a bit bias, I'm a total Nintendo Fan Boy.

Damn, now I'm so close to getting one.

I think it'll be my treat to self if I lose 15 more lbs.

BTW, what is the difference between Gamecube and Gamecube Platinum? I only see the latter listed on Amazon.

Color, that's it.

In Japan different colors for your console can boost sales, witness:

And of course it's gotten so bad that you can "pimp out" your console with decals.

Apparently, though, it's only Nintendo that seems to offer other colors, in the US, officially. (Though, here's hoping the Hello Kitty XBox is going to hit US shores)
