Bring It!

In the eternal struggle for US city with the best Thai food, I challenge the San Francisco Bay area to “bring it”:

Amina Thai Restaurant is the first Muslim Thai restaurant in the Washington Metropolitan area, run and managed by Sister Amina, a Muslim lady from Thailand.

Sure, they got a selection of halal Chinese restaurants, but halal Thai?

Update: Props to Dari and the Washington City Paper

You lose.

Berkeley's had one longer - and it gets better reviews:

Could be that it's hard, at first glance, to think of "Julie's Healthy Café" as either Thai or Muslim!

And there are two others in SF, that get excellent reviews. None down in these parts that I can find. Though there is a halal greek place in Santa Clara. And apparently a halal french caterer.

Argh!

So we just have Ethiopian and "Cajun Thai" over the bay area?

I think there might be an Ethiopian place up in SF. ;) I don't get out much though. :(

What on earth is cajun thai?!

Yeah, we have multiple Ethiopian restaurants...

And the Cajun Thai place is called "Cajun Bangkok", they just serve Cajun dishes and Thai dishes. The menu says it's a good fit due to similar ingredients and spices...

Here in the BA there's enough business to support specialized Cajun and Thai restaurants.

Is there a halal Ethiopian restaurant back there? I don't remember one...

WE also have Halal Italian, lot's of halal Italian, evidently.

I wasn't pushing for a battle of the Halal restaurants, just a battle of variety.

SF and the BA easily have DC Metro beat on Italian, even with Baltimore included...

But Ajerbaijani?

Have you got Phillipine? There's one "next door" in Mt. View. That town also has the only "two location" Thai restaurant I know - 1 vegetarian, 1 with meat. Also a nice Malaysian restaurant.

Basque?

French-Indian? (http://www.tallulasf.com/index.html)"Like a woman with a pair of Christian Louboutin boots peeking out beneath her Sari, Tallula wraps itself in the flavors of India and delivers them with a stylish French kick. "

Got Filipino. Though I've heard that no Filipino restaurant does the cuisine justice, and you should have the home made Filipino...

Only 1 local Thai chain? I can think of 3 in DC just off the top of my head, each with at least 2 locations if not more. And multiple Malaysian restaurants (though some seem to think that the pan-asian places are better than any of the Malay or Indonesian places in town, and I think I'd have to agree.

Basque you might have me on.

French-Indian? I'm not sure how french that could be. I have dined at a couple Indian restaurants in the area that do seem to have french-trained chefs running the place, but none that I can remember touting themselves that way. Though we do have "French Lebanese".

We also seem to have a few oddball places (like Basque, heh):
[*] Chinese-Peruvian
[*] Israeli
[*] Nepalese
[*] Sudanese
[*] Yemeni

And if I'd have to guess a couple places that might have more of than "out there" I think I'd guess:

[*] Greek
[*] Korean
[*] and the aforementioned Ethiopian

Oh, if you do check out Tyler Cowen's page, he can be a bit harsh at time. Especially for scottish, personally I thought that Scotland Yard was exceptional scottish food.

We have more Thai chains, dad. Krung Tahi has two locations just on one street. :D Thai Basil has two locations, too. I'm sure there are more.

We also have a pile of Indian places that just specialize in Chaat. I can't tell if they're a chain or if they all tend to just be called things like "Chaat House".

We have halal Italian? I haven't eaten italian in a long time. But hey, maybe we should be researching gluten-free retaurants... ;)

I think that Dad's point is that one location has 2 dining rooms. We have a Thai restaurant like that, but instead of one veggie and one meat, it's one "regular" Thai and one "Northern" Thai.

And yes, we have no Chaat cafés that I am aware of.

As for Filipino, that's only what I've heard. I heard the same about Moroccan food, and yet have found Moroccan restaurants good enough that I'd return to them.

As for Italian, I don't know what we have, someone put all of the area's decent Italian restaurants in Maryland... (Except for a couple, I guess)
