Like buying a new 50″ TV each year and tossing it in the dumpster. — CancelCable.com:
What if you could eliminate your gas bill and still drive 95% of the places you currently go? Or stop paying for heating by keeping your thermostat two degrees cooler? These aren’t possible, but you can stop paying for TV and still watch most of your favorite shows.

Budgets are tight. But most people are still reluctant to give up cable. Even when it may be financially crazy to keep it. Paying $95/month for cable? That’s over $1100 a year. Or enough to buy a 50″ HD Plasma TV each year.

Save the money or put it towards that new big screen TV. Then use free digital broadcast TV and avoid paying monthly cable tv fees. Save the money and earn interest on it. With a 6% rate of return…

  • After 3 years you will have saved $3747
  • After 5 years you will have saved $6648
  • After 10 years you will have saved $15,621
  • After 20 years you will have saved $44,083

Congratulations! You have now turned a major expense into an investment.

What are you missing? Not much. We did it and still watch all our favorite shows. Most were broadcast (Lost, 24, etc.) . Using a $16 digital antenna our picture quality is actually better than our old digital cable. Most of our favorite cable shows (Daily Show, Colbert Report) are available for free on the Internet. Our kids watch videos on Disney.com and Nick.com and we get current movies and HBO shows with a Netflix subscription.

Sounds great, but if you are actually paying $1oo for cable, you are probably getting a lot more channels and services than you will be able to replace. Don't get me wrong - I still feel robbed by Comcast and their craptastic service, but for something over $100 a month, I'm also getting Internet. And if I canceled TV, they would bend me over and charge another $10 a month for the same Internet service. Plus I don't know how many channels I would get out here in Fredneck. And we sure don't get FIOS or DSL. Thanks government deregulation.

Yeah, I'm paying about $70 for Internet (fastest FiOS offers) and was paying about $72 for FiOS TV, and I certainly am not watching that much TV. I can still get Heroes, CSI, My Own Worst Enemy, Eleventh Hour, etc. OTA and still get Stewart and Colbert on Hulu. The only thing left is Kids shows for Za, and she wants the same thing over and over, so DVD is a better choice anyway.

Where do you get CSI? I couldn't find that one online when My wife insisted on watched Grey's Anatomy instead :-| Maybe I just looked too soon after the season opener.

CSI? Probably watch it on CBS when it comes on. If we missed it then we have a couple of options:
• CBS seems to have the last 3 episodes up on their site.
• Netflix seems to have the whole season up on their site, up until last weeks. I assume they are adding them after they air.

And TiVo has something about Netflix streaming coming in December...

I made a quick Google Site of a list of places you can find full episode streamed TV content on the web:

Ooh, CSI - even the latest season - is now available in Netflix's "Instant queue," which is now integrated with Xbox 360 too. So I can stream on my TV them any time I want and catch up. The whole streaming Netflix movies through your Xbox works amazingly well.
