PS3 FTW?

I saw a Blu Ray demonstration while I was there as well and it was friggin' awesome. I'm half tempted to buy a PS3 just for the Blu Ray capabilities. And judging by the selection of Blu Ray discs versus HD DVDs, I can honestly say that I think Sony will win this battle. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm in agreement, but not sure I'd qualify it as a "win". At this point the Wii is already a win, the only way that will turn back is if Nintendo drops not just the ball, but 100s of balls, and no more quality games come out on the Wii. That would sink Nintendo like Atari in the 70's. Since the gaming population seems to have grown big time, I'm not sure if we can't have 2 or 3 or even 4 winners. XBox is very popular, especially with networked first person shooter gamers, though the PC is still popular in that category. The PC could sustain itself with World of Warcraft alone. And the PS3 will have the games, and has the Hi Def video, and will eventually return to Sony what they've put into it and more. So I'd recommend to pierski, go ahead and pick up a Ratchet & Clank PS3 machine, is a cheap BluRay player and can play Ratchet & Clank great games too.

Update: Duh. Win BluRay vs. HD DVD... Yeah, I hope Sony wins now, since I dropped a few bucks on a Ratchet & Clank machine PS3.

I waited a long time (for me) before picking up a PS3 as the games just weren't out there to justify picking it up. As time passed and better games came out (and the PS3's were readily in stock) I allowed the BluRay player argument to win me over. However, speaking as someone that has all three systems (and little to no time to play them), I find myself playing the 360 more than any other...unless you factor in WoW on the PC.

Really? What do you play on the XBox360? And if you remove first person shooters (which I just don't like) what's left?

Well, currently I'm playing Skate in short bursts between sessions of WoW, but I'm looking forward to playing the likes of Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect and Blue Dragon. I'll have to look at what else is on my list. I'm playing Call of Duty 4 with a bunch of the old Unreal Tournament crew, but since that's an FPS, I won't mention it here...

Basically, any time a game is released for PS3 and 360, I play it on the 360 for the achievement points. The PS3 is strictly for watching DVDs, BluRays and playing exclusive PS3 content.

Achievement points is what wins you over? Not the controller, or the better graphics, or anything else? That insidious XBox Live... Just wait until Microsoft comes out with a portable music player to compete with Sony's Walkman, then their plan will be complete...

PS3??? is an overrated DVD player that's bout it.

The PC market is pretty much dead compared to consoles and even compared to 2 years ago. There will be a few standout must-have games, but the racks have shrunk as more people have gone to the consoles. I would never have guessed I'd be playing a console 2 years ago... Keyboard+mouse is and always will be the best for FPSes, but playing on a 50+ inch HDTV kicks ass so much more.

What about blu-ray is so much better than HD? I was under the impression that they're about the same - just competing formats. I have to side against Sony, but I have to admit that their marketing is winning it for them even this late in the game. There are lots of HDDVD movies out there, but it's hard to notice them as opposed the the blue box blu-rays.

What HDDVD has going for it is about 30 or so companies have signed on to this seemingly open standard proposed by Microsoft. It is also a complete standard so any and all HDDVD players will do everything that HDDVD claims to do.

What BluRay has going for it is more players sold (via PS3s mostly), more data storage (about 2x I think), and potentially can do more, though the standard isn't done yet so any BluRay player will need firmware updates to get the new functions (easy enough on a PS3, but otherwise a pain I'm sure).
