More and more I think a Golf TDI is in my future. I found a resource that, if it is to be believed, is very convincing:

My needs for a vehicle are fuel efficiency, enjoyable to drive, flexible for cargo hauls, and big enough for my family. The Golf TDI fits all of those needs, and with the exact same body as my GTI, the only question remains is it peppy and fun to drive? From what I've read, yes it is. Oh, and in our post-apocalyptic future, I would be able to run my car on vegetable oil, that's pretty cool...

Ah yes, still on the VW bandwagon. I hope you keep a shotgun in the car. Cause it's gonna be a real trial to keep those brain-starved post-apocalypse zombies out of your passenger seat when your window fails to roll up and the car shudders to a stop due to the oil pan falling out.

I, however, will be kind enough to stop and assist you - my shiny Honda gliding crisply to a stop behind your car. Note how the zombie limbs slip lanquidly from the well-waxed hood. Stare in awe as my trio of swedish bikini assassins climb, refreshed and clean from the car's climate-controlled interior. But I digress.

What happened to the Mazda plan?

I've heard that the Mazda just isn't as enjoyable to drive.

I think a large part of what is forcing me this direction is the insane price of gas coupled with very few positive hybrid stories. Mostly I heard that Hybrids just don't have the efficiency claimed, and based on some barely scientific studies [http://www.greenhybrid.com/compare/mileage/] diesel seems to promise close to hybrid efficiency with proven technology, long lasting parts, and super driving enjoyment.

And who to buy a diesel from? No one seems to make more than VW, or has been in the diesel loving car community's hearts as long...
