Calling all Western Media

Contrary to the opinion of some (possibly most in the US):

"Jihad" is one of the few Arabic words used in English. It means holy crusade[sic], but many Muslims have pointed out that "jihad" is almost always used in English in the context of terrorism, even though the actual meaning is broader. Commentator Anisa Mehdi would like to propose a word that could be used instead of "jihad."

[ Rethinking the Word 'Jihad' ]

My understanding is that jihad means something close to struggle for the sake of God. There are internal and external struggles. Ms. Mehdi makes a good point about how the struggles of those so quick to use the word aren't even struggles for the sake of God. I would also make the point that a physical struggle is actually the easiest of all levels of struggle. Think about when you are upset is it easier to alter your own behavior? To tell others that what they've done should be corrected? Or just hit them?

Yeah, I would hit them too, it is just easier in the long run.

I forgot who reads this page, I should have pointed out that hitting is easier, but the other two are better choices. And perhaps then discussed non-violent forms for conflict resolution.

Then we can break for graham crackers and apple juice...

Dude! that's just freaky - I boght Graham crackers this evening for the first time in years. If GC's are the reward, then this nonviolence thing just might have a chance. I got the honey grahams.

I don't know about the hitting part, but I prefer the peanut butter flavored graham crackers...or those chocolate flavored ones.

Peanut Butter?

Are you referring to little graham cracker flavored bear cookies or something?

Dagnabbit! It seems as though they've been discontinued. They were a huge hit with the guys in my dorm in college. Mmmm...peanut butter graham crackers dipped in a glass of cold milk. Sooooo good.

Yeah, Nate LOVES peanut butter for some reason... I mean I think back and Nate never talked about peanut butter. Then a while back Nate got a dog and now all he does is talk about peanut butter. Go figure.
