$2.65 for a Cocoa!

Sure the picture looks inviting. And truffles are yummy.

'Chantico', a new gourmet drinking chocolate beverage, will be offered at Starbucks shops in the United States and Canada beginning January 8, 2005. Described as 'drinking a melted truffle', the chocolate has an intense, full-bodied flavor and a rich, silky texture that builds on the tradition of European drinking chocolate.

Maybe I'll have to partake later today...

Update: Say it isn't so. With the Chantico Starbucks has actually created a chocolate beverage to rival that of “My Buddy Tom”. Tom is a bit of a hot chocolate purist and will go the extra mile to make a perfect cup from scratch. Starbucks has actually produced a cup that is finer. However the Starbucks solution must cost about 10-20 times as much.

I have partaken, and the land is sweet and good and plentiful (but not really cause it is small... to fit my small hands). It is VERY VERY good, sweet, and just enough.

So Kearns did a basic cost estimation comparison between Tom's chocolate and Starbucks' Chantico. I'd be interested in knowing how their nutritional facts measure up.

Me too.

Alex? Ted? Either of you guys know what's in Tom's Hot Cocoa?

Ummm, let me think, I'm going to guess that it is made with the mystical fruits of the chocolate forest, harvested throughout the years by tiny gnomes that live in the trunks of the chocolate trees. I hear Southwest is going to start offering flights there but if you don't want to visit I am also pretty sure you can get it at Trader Joe's now.

I pride myself in making a mean cup of hot cocoa. Of course, I splurge on the cocoa and save on the fat by using non fat milk. I use wrist power to froth it up and I make it very strong. I also prefer it on the less than sweet side. The instant I tasted Chantico, I knew the milk was fully fatted. Hey, if I used whole milk, mine would be as thick too. I'd still like to have a list of their ingredients (I use unsweetened cooking chocolate, vanilla and sugar). I'd be curious to know how FRESH their ingredients are. Anyone out there with that list, please share. All in all, Chantico is pretty yummy. It just entices me to up the anti on my own version. Happy slurping!

According to a full page ad in the San Jose Mercury this morning, Chantico is now making it's left coast debut. I think I'll pass. Chocolate is for eating. And drizzling on ice cream.

Perhaps that's best. Research may show that Chantico actually means "The crack of the cholocate world" in Aztec...
